History of Coffee

  • The coffee plant originated in Ethiopia, where coffee beans were consumed for medicinal use.
  • The plant was introduced to Yemen in the 14th century and was appreciated for its energizing quality
  • An old story tells that, a young goat herder in Yemen found his goats become excited when they ate certain red berries. He picked some of them and prepared brew. He drank and found himself incredibly alert and thus coffee became a beverage
  • Traveling via Mecca, Cairo, the Middle East, and Constantinople, coffee arrived in Europe in the 17th century
  • Coffee replaced beer and wine which was consumed with breakfast in Europe
  • Interestingly, there was a period in history when Coffee was banned in some countries calling it Devil’s drink. Smuggling and secret trade of coffee was started at that time.
  • British brought coffee in India, though Mughal had knowledge about it it was a drink limited for elite people only
