Things to know about Jayakwadi Dam

  • It is constructed on Godavari river at Jayakwadi, Paithan 52 km from Aurangabad
  • It is one of the largest earthen dams in Asia
  • The foundation of the dam was laid by the then PM Lal Bahadur Shastri on 18th October 1965
  • It was inaugurated on 24th February 1976 by the then PM Indira Gandhi.
  • Jayakwadi dam, also known as Nathsagar is the life source for drought prone Marathwada
  • It has total water storage capacity of 2909 Million Cubic Meters
  • It also runs a hydroelectric power plant of 12 MW capacity generating electricity
  • Domestic, agricultural, commercial and industrial water supply of region is mainly dependent on this dam
